Home Makeover: Exterior Edition

Now I have my sights set on an exterior makeover.

While we know it will be a while (as we have some other, less-glamorous projects to work on — such as improving drainage in the yard), it's fun to think about how to change and improve the outside look of our home. Currently we have red brick, cream/yellow trim and hunter/kelly green shutters. This look has got to go!

Now. Also note how we have a mix of materials: some brick, some siding, etc. Around back (the exterior of the walk-out basement) is a stucco/cement type mixture. Of course the current landscaping (or lack thereof) also leaves something to be desired...

Better Homes and Gardens' Web Site has a neat tool called "Color-a-Home." While you can't upload a photo of your house, you can choose a house like yours and switch out the trim, door, brick/trim, roof and shutter colors.

In my dreams. ahhhh....

Wow. Isn't that better?

Nice! I love the red door with the white. I used to get so excited about home improvement projects, but then I got lazy...

Indeed it is! The red door is perfect! But the roof's dark color makes the atmosphere of the house different. A lighter shade or color may blend better with the red door.

I think that your home looks nice as it is. But when I saw your dream makeover, I gotta admit that working on one theme is better. And with respect to Max’s comment, how about doing a makeover themed with white sidings, grey roofs, a red door, and dark grey shutters? Anyway, how did the makeover go?

Hi Aubrey - here is the "after" picture of the painted house. We're very happy with it? :) We only took on the paint and shutter colors for now but will eventually be doing a new roof and a painted door.

The red door just won my heart! :D Did you pursue creating this look? It’s an extreme transition from a brick house, and would be a lot of work but I’m sure it would be an all-out fulfillment on your part as well. I see, you have to replace the roof too.

Hi Leif - we kept the brick as it was but did paint it. We hope to paint the black door red sometime soon. See the "after" look here: http://katystreamsherconsciousness.blogspot.com/2011/02/grand-reveal.html. And you're right - we do need a new roof!

Did you push through with this exterior makeover? Although this has been 2 years already, I wanna know if you gave this look a go. If you painted your house like this, it should've looked stunning.

Hi - thanks for the feedback. We DID end up doing the makeover sans the door improvement. We have a new roof, painted brick and panted shutters. Check out pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/katymallory/8384811507/in/set-72157632534004179
