"We need to get our kids back outside, playing with sticks in the street like I did when I was little," she said. "Expand your mind, go outside and get to see what this world is like."
- Caressa Cameron, Miss America 2010-2011 (formerly Miss Virginia)
I can't wait until next year when a Miss America contestant has to take up "Public Safety/Keeping Kids from Playing the Street" as her platform.

She's got one good point in all of this: it would be cool if streets could be used for something other than just driving cars really fast.
Though I grew up on the sort of sleepy street she's probably alluding to, I never actually played with sticks.
I am poking fun but I see her point, too. I lived on more than one cul-de-sac street where we could ride bikes, scooters, etc. and not think a second thing about safety. It's wild how much kids' past times have changes in less than 20 years.
great little piece by michael chabon that kind of relates:

Personally I hope my kids run with scissors one day. Though I do see her point too.
